E-MTB

Do you have questions about E-MTB tyres?

Why are there special E-MTB tyres?
E-mountain bikes are designed for even higher loads than mountain bikes. Manufacturers are responding to this development with special E-MTB tyres. Stronger casings and/or optimised rubber compounds should be able to withstand the increased loads. The Zweirad Industrie Verband ZIV agrees and is of the opinion that the CE marking of an e-bike can only be retained with such tyres after a tyre change. For S-pedelecs with pedal assistance up to 45 km/h, the German Road Traffic Regulations (StVZO) stipulate ECE-R75 approval, which is valid throughout Europe.
Do E-MTB tyres have advantages on normal mountain bikes?
In principle, you can ride any E-MTB tyre on your "analogue" MTB, too. There will be no problems in terms of compatibility or riding behaviour. Tyres for e-mountain bikes are only designed to be stable enough to meet the manufacturer's requirements for use on e-MTBs. In order to make your search easier, you will find them in a separate category.
Can I ride an E-MTB with lower tyre pressure?
That depends entirely on your setup: Compared to identical wheels in a non-e-bike, you should select a slightly higher air pressure for an e-mountain bike. The reasons for this are the higher system weight and the stronger drive forces. The motor support, on the other hand, means you can afford more weight and rolling resistance, i.e. wider tyres with thicker casings – and therefore less air pressure. Puncture protection belts (see tyre accessories) are also an option to further reduce the air pressure and to generate maximum grip. But be careful: At a certain point, the air pressure becomes too low and the risk of spongy cornering behaviour, over/under-steering (self-steering) and sudden air loss (burping) increases.
